Vineyards
The grapes come from two Eden Valley blocks that have historically provided Riesling with the structure and elegance that has become synonymous with the premium quality of the Steingarten label.
Vintage Conditions
A low yielding vintage, thanks to lower than average rainfall across winter and spring, as well as a cool September and some hail damage in November. Lower yields across Eden Valley led to increased flavour development and structure in the grapes that remained. Cool night time temperatures in February meant that acid retention during ripening was excellent producing concentrated wines with good acid balance.
Winemaking
To ensure minimal skin contact, the must was chilled after crushing and the free run juice was immediately drained. Specially selected strains of yeast were used for a cool fermentation to ensure that the elegant flavours, so typical of Riesling, were retained.
